The Covid-19 pandemic required us to remain home. However, mum still had to go into the office. This pandemic saw many home chefs being born and we wanted to try our hand at it too. But there’s always the laze factor, we wanted to make our comfort food but with less effort. So, we asked her to prepare the spice mixes beforehand allowing us to whip up a curry whenever we felt like it. As we tried to make this as easy and quick as possible, we managed to cut down various steps and maintain all the flavour and the health benefits and realised that this shouldn’t go unshared.
We are Kirthana, Jawahari and Laavinia Jaiganth. Our mum has always made us curries by blending her own spices. This culture was handed down to her by our grandma who advised my mum that ‘good spices are crucial for healthy and fantastic tasting food’. It was so important to her that she travelled from Sembawang to Serangoon Road to buy the best spices she could afford, even before Singapore was independent.
